คำเชื่อมในภาษาอังกฤษแบ่งออกได้เป็น 3 ประเภทหลักๆ ได้แก่

1. Coordinating Conjunction

2. Subordinating Conjunction

3. Conjunctive Adverbs

Coordinating Conjunction

1. And – และ

She fell downstairs and broke her leg.

2. But – แต่

It's an old car, but it's very reliable.

3. Nor – และ (รูปปฏิเสธ)

I don't expect children to be rude, nor do I expect to be disobeyed.

4. So – ดังนั้น

I was feeling hungry, so I made myself a sandwich.

5. For – เพราะว่า

I cannot tell whether she is old or young, for I have never seen her.

6. Yet – แต่ (ต่างกับ but ตรงที่ ประโยคหลัง yet เป็นประโยคที่หักมุม)

Kelly was a convicted criminal, yet many people admired him.

Subordinating Conjunction

• After – หลังจาก...

• Although – แม้ว่า...

• As – ขณะที่... / ดังที่... / ตามที่...

Do as I say – ทำตามที่ฉันสั่ง

As Napoleon once said, attack is the best method of defence. – ดังที่นโปเลียนได้กล่าวไว้ การโจมตีคือวิธีที่ดีที่สุดในการป้องกัน

ส่วนมากจะถูกแปลในรูปประโยคภาษาไทยเป็น “...ว่า...หรือ...” และ “...ไม่ว่า...หรือ....”

Tom asked me whether I needed any help. – ทอมถามฉันว่าฉันต้องการความช่วยเหลือหรือไม่

Do you think whether I should find a job or study a master's degree? – คุณคิดว่าฉันควรจะหางานหรือเรียนต่อโทดี

Whether it rains or not, we will play football. – ไม่ว่าฝนจะตกหรือไม่ เราจะเตะบอล

It is not important whether we win or lose. – มันไม่สำคัญ ไม่ว่าเราจะชนะหรือแพ้

• While – ในขณะที่...

Note

- Although, Even though, และ Though (แม้ว่า) – แปลว่า “แม้ว่า” และใช้เหมือนกันทั้งสามคำ

- Until และ Till – แปลว่า “จนกระทั่ง” แต่ว่า Till เป็นภาษาพูด

- Provided และ If – แปลว่า “ถ้า” แต่ว่า Provided จะมีความเป็นทางการกว่า

Conjunctive Adverbs
